Man and trees are inseparable from the time immemorial. Man was born in the cradle of trees. He got almost all the essential ingredients of his survival from trees. We are aware that our ancestors lived and breathed in the forest, got their food and shelter in the forest.
Scientists are unanimous on one point that for the development of healthy life a country must have 33% of its area covered with forest. But greedy man has destroyed it to a great extent to his own peril. Large-scale deforestation is causing great damages to our environment.
It is tree which can ensure a pollution-free environment. It prevents soil erosion and flood. Its give off moisture and cool the atmosphere . It provides many essential items of life. They include medicine, food, fuel, timber, shelter etc. The devastating tsunami on 26/12/04 has pointed out glaringly that areas with mangroves were safe even in the face of high waves.
Felling of trees in islands and sea shores was at the root of massive damages. Now, utility of trees is widely admitted. The government has come out with plans of social forestry. “Banomohatsab” is also celebrated to make the people aware and extend the area of plantation.
