Rabindranath Tagore is the best known Indian poet in the world. He is one of the best genius our country has ever produced. This great poet was born on 7th May in 1861, at Jorasanko in Kolkata. His
father Debendranath Tagore was a big zaminder. His mother was Sarada Debi.
Their family was very cultured. This environment helped Rabindranath right from his early childhood to build his character and personality. He bagan to write poems from his boyhood. He got a lot of appreciation. This encouraged him to write more and more. He did it in almost all the branches of literature.
He wrote prolific prose which included short stories, novels essays etc. He wrote brilliant dramas. He did his best in poetry. He won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1913 for his book of poems “Geetanjali” He has the distinction of writing time-tested songs. He set up Viawa Bharati and Santiniketan. This great soul passed away on 7th August, 1941.
